Hey everyone, I came across this incredible 2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Mystichrome convertible with only 6,000 miles on the odometer. I’m seriously considering pulling the trigger on it, but wanted to get some input from the community first.

The car is in absolutely pristine condition – the Mystichrome paint is stunning, shifting between purple, green, and gold depending on the light. It’s a manual transmission with the legendary 5.4L supercharged V8 engine that produces 550 horsepower. The interior looks showroom fresh, and all the service records appear to be documented.

For context, this is one of the final years for the SVT Cobra before Ford discontinued the nameplate. The Mystichrome color was particularly exclusive, making these increasingly rare and sought after by collectors. The low mileage is exceptional for a 20-year-old vehicle.

My main concerns are whether this is still a good investment in today’s market, and if the maintenance costs will be prohibitive as an older supercharged vehicle. I’d also love to know if anyone here has experience with these specific model years and what common issues I should watch out for.

I’m planning to use it as a weekend driver and possibly a weekend track car, nothing crazy. But I want to make sure I’m making an informed decision before committing. Any advice, warnings, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

That’s an absolute gem if the documentation is solid. The Mystichrome paint alone makes it a special find. These SVT Cobras have held their value remarkably well, especially with that mileage. I’d get a pre-purchase inspection from a Ford specialist before committing though.

The 5.4L supercharged engine is a beast, no doubt, but maintenance costs on these can get serious. Supercharger fluid, premium fuel requirements, and potential boost pressure issues down the line. Budget for $2,500-4,000 annually just to keep it in top shape. Not trying to scare you, just being real.

6k miles is unreal for a 2004. Are you sure about those numbers? That seems almost too good to be true. I’d definitely have a third-party inspector verify the mileage before purchasing.

I disagree with the maintenance cost concerns. If the car has been properly maintained up to this point, you’re looking at standard routine service. These engines are solid. The real question is whether you’re willing to pay what they’re asking.

The convertible top on these gets mixed reviews over time. Make sure you have it inspected thoroughly. They can be pricey to replace if it needs work. Otherwise, this looks like a fantastic acquisition for the right price.

Mystichrome is such a gorgeous color. I saw one of these at a car show last year and it absolutely turned heads. If you’re planning to track it, just know these are heavy beasts compared to modern track cars. Still incredibly fun though.

What’s the asking price? That’ll really determine whether it’s worth it. These have appreciated lately, but I’ve also seen people ask for way too much based on the name alone.

Thanks for all the feedback so far! To clarify, the price is actually reasonable for the condition and mileage – somewhere in the mid-$40k range. I’m leaning toward having a pre-purchase inspection done before I finalize anything. The maintenance cost warning is definitely something I needed to hear.

You’ll want to check the supercharger seal condition carefully. These can fail and cause oil leakage into the intercooler. It’s not the end of the world if it happens, but it’s a repair that needs addressing sooner rather than later.

This is the wrong generation to track regularly, in my opinion. The handling is dated compared to what you can get now. Better to keep it as a weekend cruiser and preserve its value. These are becoming more collectible.

The 2004 SVT Cobra is hands down one of the most iconic American muscle cars. That supercharged 5.4 is legendary. Go for it if the price is right and the service history checks out.

Make absolutely sure about the transmission condition. These cars can be hard on manuals if they’ve been driven aggressively. Test drive it thoroughly and feel how the clutch engages through the range.

I’ve always thought the Mystichrome paint was overrated, honestly. It’s cool but I’d much rather have the regular silver or the darker colors. That said, it definitely affects collector appeal and resale value.

One thing people overlook with these Cobras is insurance. Make sure you check rates before buying. Sporty cars from the 2000s can surprise you with higher premiums.
