Hey everyone! I recently came across this stunning 1960 MG MGA 1600 Mk I Roadster and I’m seriously considering making a move on it. This is a genuine piece of British automotive history that’s been modernized with some thoughtful upgrades.

The MGA 1600 is already a fantastic classic sports car, but what really caught my attention is the 5-speed transmission conversion. The original cars came with a 4-speed, so adding the fifth gear is a smart modification for highway cruising without sacrificing the classic character. The 1600cc engine paired with this setup should make for a really engaging driving experience.

The roadster configuration is exactly what I’m after – open-air motoring with that vintage British charm. The car appears to be in solid condition from the photos, and the combination of period-correct styling with practical modern upgrades seems like the sweet spot between authenticity and usability.

I’ve always loved the styling of the MGA. The long hood and proportions just look right. How does the body condition look? Any signs of rust? That’s usually the biggest concern with these older British cars sitting in damp climates.

The 5-speed is definitely the way to go if you plan to actually drive this regularly. Fourth gear overdrive makes a huge difference on long drives. My concern would be sourcing parts if something major goes wrong. Have you checked parts availability?

This looks amazing! I’m not as technical as some of the others here, but I love the aesthetic. The fact that it’s been properly modernized with the transmission upgrade shows someone cared about this car. The color looks perfect too!

Before you buy, make sure you factor in proper maintenance costs. These old British cars are charming but they require regular attention. I’d budget at least $2000-3000 annually for maintenance, inspections, and unexpected repairs. The cooling system alone can be finicky on these.

I was hoping to use this as a weekend driver, so regular upkeep is definitely something I need to plan for. Have any of you had experience with the electrical systems on MGAs? I’ve heard those can be temperamental.

The MGA is great, but honestly I think you’re overpaying for this one. The market for these has gotten pretty inflated lately. You could probably find something similar for less if you’re patient. The 5-speed conversion is nice but doesn’t add huge value.

I disagree with that assessment. Well-maintained MGAs are holding their value really well right now. The 5-speed alone is worth something because it saves the next owner from having to do the conversion themselves. This looks like a quality example to me.

Those Dunlop wheels look original or close to it. Really adds to the authenticity. Do you know anything about the restoration history? Is this a full nut-and-bolt restoration or was it more of a mechanical refresh?

The MGA 1600 is seriously underrated compared to the A-series. More power, better handling, and honestly just as beautiful. This looks like a fair asking price if everything checks out mechanically. You should definitely get a pre-purchase inspection.

Be careful with the conversion work if you can’t verify who did it. Improper installation of a 5-speed can cause drivetrain issues. Make sure you have documentation of the work and get it on a lift to inspect the modifications thoroughly.

How’s the interior? The photos don’t show much detail of the cabin. Original seats? Dashboard condition? That can make a huge difference in the ownership experience and overall value.

One more thing – check the title and provenance carefully. Make sure all the documentation is clean. With classic cars, sometimes you run into issues with previous modifications not being properly registered or documented. Could save you headaches later.
