      I just read this fascinating article about Smokey Yunick’s Hot Vapor Engine, and I have to say it’s one of the most intriguing automotive innovations I’ve come across. For those unfamiliar, Smokey was a legendary mechanic and engineer who developed this experimental engine concept that used hot vapor combustion instead of traditional internal combustion methods.

      The genius part is undeniable. Yunick’s approach to thermodynamic efficiency was revolutionary for its time. He understood that conventional engines waste enormous amounts of heat energy, and his hot vapor concept attempted to capture and utilize that wasted thermal energy. The theoretical efficiency gains were staggering compared to standard piston engines. It’s the kind of outside-the-box thinking that defines true innovation.

      However, the safety concerns are equally impossible to ignore. The extreme temperatures required for the hot vapor system created massive engineering challenges. The engine design involved pressurized vapor systems that operated at temperatures and pressures that pushed the limits of materials available at the time.           I respectfully disagree with the notion that this was genius. The hot vapor engine was an impractical concept that never worked reliably. Yes, Smokey was creative, but creativity without practical results isn’t the same as genuine innovation. The fact it never reached production speaks volumes about its fundamental flaws.

              Great points from everyone. I think what fascinates me most is that Smokey was solving a real problem—thermal efficiency—just using an unconventional method. Modern turbocharging and direct injection address similar concerns more safely, but his fundamental insight about wasted heat was absolutely correct.                 The thermodynamic theory was sound, but execution is everything in engineering. Smokey understood the principles, but the actual hardware couldn’t deliver reliably. That gap between theory and reality is why this never went anywhere. Still, mad respect for the attempt.

                  I keep thinking about the liability issues. Even if Smokey had managed to get one of these engines into a production vehicle, the insurance and legal ramifications of such a dangerous system would have been impossible to navigate. Modern regulation never would have allowed it anyway.

                    The maintenance costs on something like this would have been absolutely brutal. Specialized repairs, proprietary parts, trained technicians—the dealer network alone would have been a nightmare. Even if they solved the safety issues, keeping these engines running would have bankrupted most owners.

                        Safety wasn’t just about temperature either. The vapor system added complexity throughout the entire vehicle. More components meant more failure points. More failure points meant more ways the system could catastrophically fail while you’re driving. That’s not engineering paranoia, that’s just engineering reality.

                          I disagree that this was purely genius. It was an interesting experiment, but experiments fail for reasons. The hot vapor engine failed because the fundamental design had insurmountable practical problems. Not every ambitious idea deserves canonization just because it was ambitious.

                            I wonder if Smokey would have pursued this differently if he’d had access to modern materials and testing equipment. Finite element analysis alone might have solved many of the design challenges that seemed insurmountable in his era. We’ll never know what might have been possible.

                              The article does a good job highlighting both the brilliance and the danger. You don’t often see that kind of balanced perspective on unconventional engineering. Too many people either dismiss it entirely or treat Smokey like he’s some kind of unappreciated genius. The truth is more nuanced.
