Great points from everyone. I think what fascinates me most is that Smokey was solving a real problem—thermal efficiency—just using an unconventional method. Modern turbocharging and direct injection address similar concerns more safely, but his fundamental insight about wasted heat was absolutely correct. Maybe the hot vapor concept was the wrong solution, but the problem he identified was real.
