Hey everyone, I came across this incredible 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 3.5 going to auction at Bring a Trailer with no reserve. This is a seriously impressive classic that caught my attention. The 300SEL 3.5 represents one of Mercedes’ finest engineering achievements from the early 1970s, featuring that legendary 3.5-liter V8 engine paired with air suspension technology that was revolutionary for its time.

What makes this particular example interesting is its project status, which means there’s definitely some work ahead for the next owner. However, for someone willing to invest time and resources, this could become an absolutely stunning restoration. The 300SEL has always been one of my dream cars – the combination of luxury, performance, and engineering excellence is unmatched.

The W109 chassis is known for its solid construction and the 3.5 V8 is a powerhouse that still impresses today. Original parts are becoming harder to find, so getting one of these while it’s still available is worth considering. The no reserve aspect means this could sell for a fair price depending on collector interest.

I’m seriously contemplating bidding on this one myself. The investment potential combined with the driving experience makes this a compelling opportunity. Anyone else following this listing? Would love to hear thoughts from the community about these classic Mercedes V8s and whether a restoration project like this is worth tackling. What’s your experience with 1970s Mercedes restoration?

That 300SEL 3.5 is gorgeous! The engineering from that era really was something special. Air suspension on a car from 1970 is just incredible. Have you owned vintage Mercedes before, or would this be your first?

Beautiful car but I have to disagree with the no reserve auction strategy. These project cars often go for less than they’re worth at auction. Better to find a private sale where you have more negotiating power.

Just throwing this out there – the maintenance costs on these old Mercedes are absolutely brutal. I’m talking $3,000-5,000 just for basic service if you’re going to an experienced shop. The parts alone can drain your wallet fast. Make sure you budget accordingly.

The 300SEL 3.5 is a masterpiece. That air suspension alone makes it worth pursuing. Modern cars wish they had this kind of handling from the 70s.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Kevin50, I see your point about private sales, but there’s something about the auction format that draws me in – at least you know there won’t be any hidden surprises in terms of reserve prices. The transparency is appealing even if the price might be higher.

The 300SEL is such an iconic model. That V8 engine must be absolutely brutal in a car from that era. I’d be curious to know what the estimated value is before the auction starts.

Project status usually means cosmetics and maybe some mechanical work. Does anyone know what specific issues this particular car has? That would really help evaluate the bid price.

The W109 platform is solid. If the frame and structural integrity are good, this could be a worthwhile project. Just need to verify that before bidding serious money.

Kevinlim307, if you do end up bidding, please update us! I’d love to follow this auction. The 300SEL deserves to be brought back to glory.

Mercedes restoration specialists in the US can charge premium prices. Make sure you have at least 3-4 quotes before committing to any work. This will save you significant money.

The 300SEL 3.5 V8 is one of the best sounding engines ever created. Even in project condition, if that engine still turns over, you’ve got something special.

I have to disagree with the hype here. Project cars are money pits and this Mercedes would be no exception. You’d spend double the purchase price getting it properly restored. Not a smart financial move IMO.

The styling of the 300SEL from 1970 still looks modern today. That’s how you know it’s a classic design. Really timeless elegance.

Does anyone know if parts availability is still decent for these? I imagine finding original trim and interior pieces would be challenging in 2024.
