Hey everyone, I just picked up this beautiful 1977 Lotus Eclat with a 4-speed manual transmission and I’m excited to share it with the community. This is my first Lotus and I’m planning to do a full restoration while keeping it as original as possible.

The car has the original 1.6L engine and appears to be in relatively solid condition for its age. The body is mostly rust-free, though there’s some surface corrosion on the undercarriage that needs attention. The interior is original but needs some TLC – the seats could use reupholstering and the dashboard has some cracks.

I’ve already sourced some NOS parts including gaskets, seals, and weatherstripping. The mechanical systems seem sound, but I’m planning to rebuild the carburetor and refresh the cooling system before driving it regularly.

      My main goals are:
      1. Get the engine running smoothly and reliably
      2. Restore the interior to period-correct condition
      3. Address any rust issues and refresh the paint
      4. Replace worn suspension components

I’m documenting everything as I go and would love to hear from anyone with Eclat experience. This car represents British engineering excellence from the 70s and deserves proper care. Looking forward to your insights and recommendations as I tackle this project.

Any advice on sourcing hard-to-find Lotus parts would be greatly appreciated!

That’s a fantastic find! The Eclat is such an underrated classic. The body panels are known for being solid on these cars. Have you checked the floor pans yet? That’s typically where these Lotus models start to show their age. Great documentation plan too – you’ll want detailed photos for reference.

Beautiful project! The 4-speed is the right choice for a 77 Eclat. I have to be honest though – maintenance costs on these British classics can add up quickly. Budget for frequent carburetor work, fuel system cleaning, and electrical gremlins. I’d estimate $300-500 monthly if you’re driving it regularly. Still worth it though!

How much did you pay for it? Looking to get into a Lotus myself and curious about market prices. The Eclat doesn’t get nearly enough love compared to the Elite or Esprit.

The 1.6L engine in these is actually pretty responsive once you get the carb dialed in properly. Make sure to use period-correct spark plug wires – the reproduction ones are key for reliable ignition. Which carburetor setup are you working with?

Thanks for all the encouragement! To answer questions – I picked up the Eclat for a reasonable price from an estate. The floor pans look good from what I can see. I’m planning to lift it soon for a complete undercarriage inspection. The carburetor is a Dellorto, which I’m hoping to get professionally cleaned first before any rebuild work.

I respectfully disagree about the maintenance costs being that high. My buddy had an Eclat for years and the costs were minimal – just regular oil changes, the occasional fuel filter, and normal consumables. These aren’t complicated cars at all. They’re actually quite simple by comparison to modern vehicles.

The Eclat design is stunning. I love those clean lines and the way the nose slopes down. Are you planning to keep the original color scheme? Those 70s Lotus colors were really special.

Where are you sourcing your NOS parts? I’ve had luck with British Car specialists and a few dedicated Lotus forums. eBay Motors can work but quality is inconsistent. Would be interested in your supplier list if you’re willing to share.

That’s going to be an amazing restoration! The Eclat deserves more recognition in the classic car community. Definitely keep us updated with progress photos. These Lotus projects are always satisfying to follow.

I have to push back on the idea of keeping it completely original. Modern upgrades like electronic ignition, a better fuel pump, and updated cooling lines make these cars far more reliable for actual driving. Original is nice for shows, but practical improvements help you enjoy the car more.

The 4-speed box is going to feel vintage but that’s part of the charm. Just make sure the clutch is in good shape. Replacement clutches for these aren’t cheap and installation labor adds up. How’s yours feeling?

This is exactly the kind of project I want to tackle. The Eclat is so affordable compared to other British sports cars right now. Great inspiration!

Beautiful car! My father had an Eclat back in the 80s and I have great memories of drives in it. The handling is surprisingly good for a car that age. Wishing you success with the restoration – these Lotus models deserve preservation.
