I recently came across this stunning 1984 BMW M635CSi and I’m seriously considering making a move on it. This is one of those cars that doesn’t get nearly enough attention compared to the E30 M3, but the engineering and performance are absolutely exceptional.

For those unfamiliar, the M635CSi was the European homologation special produced from 1984-1990. It features a 3.5-liter M88/3 inline-six engine producing 286 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. The Getrag 260/5 five-speed manual transmission puts power to the road with genuine capability that still feels modern today.

What really strikes me about this particular example is the original Euro specification trim, the paint quality, and what appears to be comprehensive maintenance records. The chassis dynamics are pure BMW – precise steering, balanced weight distribution, and that organic mechanical feedback you simply cannot find in modern cars.

I’ve been researching M635CSi values and ownership costs, and while they’re appreciating, they’re still somewhat undervalued compared to E30 M3s. The parts availability is reasonable for an ’80s performance car, and there’s a dedicated community of enthusiasts who support these machines.

My main questions: Has anyone here owned or extensively driven a Euro M635CSi? What should I be looking for during inspection? Are there any specific weak points or common issues with the M88/3 engine platform? Any insight into depreciation trends and investment potential would be appreciated as well.

I’d love to hear from fellow BMW collectors and enthusiasts about their experiences with this particular model. Looking forward to the discussion!

That M88/3 engine is incredibly underrated. The 286hp figure doesn’t tell the whole story – these engines are known for strong midrange torque and excellent longevity when properly maintained. If you can secure one with service records, you’re looking at a solid investment piece.

I have to respectfully disagree with the investment potential angle here. These cars are lovely but they’re not appreciating the way people think. The E30 M3 market has legs because of motorsport history. The M635CSi, while beautiful, remains somewhat forgotten. Expect slow appreciation at best.

Maintenance costs on these can get serious fast. I had a friend with a ’86 M635CSi and after suspension rebuilds, transmission service, and engine work, he was looking at €6,000+ annually just to keep it sorted. Just something to factor into your decision.

The five-speed Getrag is bulletproof compared to modern transmissions. Parts are still available and the ratios make for engaging driving. One of the better aspects of owning one of these classics honestly.

Those Euro specs with the correct Fuchs wheels and original paint are becoming harder to find. If this one has both, that’s worth premium consideration. The details matter with 1980s BMWs – originality commands respect in collector circles.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far. @henrik_ricciy – that’s exactly the kind of practical information I was hoping for. The €6k annual maintenance estimate doesn’t scare me off, but I appreciate knowing what I’m getting into. This won’t be a weekend driver, it’ll be a proper commitment. That’s actually part of the appeal for me.

The M635CSi deserves more respect in the classic car world. It represents genuine engineering excellence from the mid-80s. If you’re buying for passion rather than pure investment returns, you can’t go wrong with these machines.

I disagree slightly with the earlier sentiment about undervaluation. Market comparables from the past 18 months show these trending upward, particularly original Euro examples. The collector market is becoming more sophisticated and recognizing these cars.

Check the cooling system thoroughly before purchase. These M88 engines can develop issues with the radiator seals and water pump bearings over time. A full coolant flush and pressure test are non-negotiable during pre-purchase inspection.

The M635CSi is what happens when BMW prioritized substance over marketing hype. No flashy body kit needed – just pure performance wrapped in understated elegance. This is exactly the kind of car I want to own.

Does the listing mention anything about the original interior condition? Leather quality on these cars from 1984 can be hit or miss depending on storage and maintenance. Original factory seats are becoming expensive to replace.

The steering feel on these M635CSis is something special. Modern power steering with actual feedback – you rarely get that combination anymore. Definitely worth a test drive just for that experience alone.

Fuel consumption on the M88/3 is actually respectable for a 3.5L engine from that era. Around 8-9L/100km in mixed driving if you’re not hammering it constantly. Worth considering if you plan on regular usage.

I’m skeptical about long-term ownership without significant capital reserves. These are beautiful machines, but parts sourcing and specialist labor in 2024 aren’t getting cheaper. Make sure your budget includes contingency for unexpected work.
