Just found this 1996 Ford F-250 HD XLT Crew Cab with the Power Stroke diesel engine and 4×4 capability on Bring a Trailer. This is a classic workhorse from the mid-90s that still has plenty of life left in it. The Power Stroke diesel is known for reliability and longevity, especially for those who maintain them properly. The crew cab configuration makes it practical for hauling passengers, and the 4×4 setup handles tough terrain. From what I can see in the listing, the truck appears to be in decent condition with good bones. The XLT trim level gives it some comfort features that were respectable for the era. I’m seriously considering this for my next project vehicle – either as a daily driver or weekend work truck. The diesel engine is a huge advantage for fuel economy compared to the gas V8 options available in that generation. Has anyone here owned a similar Power Stroke F-250 from the mid-90s? Would love to hear about your experiences with reliability, maintenance, and what kind of performance you’ve gotten out of it. That’s a solid generation F-250. The 7.3 Power Stroke is one of the best diesel engines Ford ever made. These trucks run forever if you keep up with oil changes. I’d jump on it if the service history is clean.

Nice find! The crew cab is definitely the way to go if you need passenger space. Have you checked the frame for rust? That’s usually the biggest concern with 90s trucks from northern climates.

I’d be cautious about the transmission. Depending on which one it has, could be expensive to rebuild. The 4R100 is solid but the earlier E4OD can be problematic. Make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection from a diesel specialist.

Power Stroke all the way! Those engines are legends. My buddy had a similar year and it made it to 280k miles with minimal issues. Just keep the fuel filter clean and you’re good.

The 4×4 drivetrain on these is bulletproof. I’m more concerned about interior condition and whether the AC still works. Replacing climate control components on older Fords can get expensive.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I’m planning to get a pre-purchase inspection done this week. The seller provided some maintenance records which is a good sign. The frame looked solid in the photos, but I’ll definitely have a diesel mechanic give it a thorough once-over before committing.

Just be aware that maintenance costs on these older Fords add up. I’m talking new water pumps, fuel injectors, turbo rebuilds – not cheap. Budget accordingly if you plan to keep it long-term.

The XLT trim is nice but honestly, these trucks are known more for what they can do than comfort. Don’t expect luxury features to be in perfect working order after 25+ years.

Disagree with the maintenance concerns. If you buy one that’s been well-maintained, these trucks are actually very reasonable to own. The Power Stroke is built tough and parts are affordable.

Love these trucks. The diesel market has really appreciated since these came out. You might actually come out okay if you decide to sell later. Hold value better than the gas versions.

How many miles on this particular truck? That’s going to be the biggest factor in deciding if it’s worth the asking price. Low mileage examples are getting harder to find.

The crew cab four-door is the superior choice. Way more practical than the regular cab for actual daily driving. This looks like a good example from the photos.

I’d rather see a 7.3 Power Stroke than the early Cummins trucks from this era. Ford really nailed the diesel game in the mid-90s with these engines.
