Hey everyone, I recently came across this 2001 Porsche Boxster S with a 6-speed manual transmission and I’m seriously considering making a move on it. For those familiar with the Boxster lineup, this generation represents some solid value in the sports car market right now.

The car appears to be in decent condition with the iconic mid-engine layout that Porsche is known for. The 3.2L flat-six engine in the S model produces around 252 horsepower, which is respectable for a 2001. The 6-speed manual is what really caught my attention – it’s becoming harder to find these in good condition, especially with manual transmissions.

I’ve done some preliminary research on ownership costs and general reliability, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s owned a Boxster from this era. What are the major things I should look out for? Are there any known issues with the M97 engine or the transmission? I know these cars can be finicky, but the driving experience seems worth it.

The asking price seems reasonable for what appears to be good condition, but I want to make sure I’m not walking into a money pit. I’d be cautious about this generation. The 996 and early Boxster engines had some serious issues. Have you had a pre-purchase inspection done by a Porsche specialist? That’s absolutely essential before committing.

The 2001 Boxster S is underrated. Check the timing chain tensioners carefully though – those are known to wear. If the previous owner did the recall work, that’s a good sign.

I disagree with the negativity here. Boxsters are solid cars if you maintain them properly. Just don’t cheap out on repairs and you’ll have a blast.

Are the brakes original? If so, definitely plan for replacement soon. The rotors and pads on these cars don’t last forever and Porsche brake parts aren’t cheap.

The 6-speed manual is actually quite good compared to the tiptronic of that era. Fuel economy won’t be amazing though – expect around 18-22 mpg depending on driving habits.
