Hey everyone! I came across this 2004 Ford Thunderbird listed at no reserve on Bring a Trailer and I’m really intrigued. This is one of those retro-styled convertibles that Ford brought back in the early 2000s, and I think it’s worth discussing.

From what I can see in the listing, this Thunderbird appears to be in decent condition with what looks like original or well-maintained exterior trim. The convertible top is always a big consideration on these older cars – that’s typically one of the first things that needs attention.

I’m curious about the real-world ownership experience with these. They’re not super common on the road anymore, which makes them interesting. The styling is definitely polarizing – some people love the retro throwback design while others think it’s a bit much. But there’s something charming about it.

The no-reserve aspect is interesting too. That could mean this could go for a steal if bidding stays low, or it could climb significantly if collectors get into a bidding war. I’ve seen these Thunderbirds range pretty widely in price depending on condition and mileage.

I’m mostly curious what the community thinks about these cars. Are they reliable daily drivers? What are common issues to watch for? And for those who’ve owned one or considered it – was it worth the investment? The insurance and maintenance costs can’t be trivial on a car like this.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks about this particular model and whether anyone here has experience with 2004-2005 Thunderbirds!

That’s a cool find! I’ve always liked the retro styling of these Thunderbirds. They’re definitely conversation starters. My only concern would be finding parts when you need them. Not as common as other Ford models from that era.

I actually disagree with the retro styling taking off like it did. The 2004 Thunderbird design feels dated now, and I think it’ll only get worse as time goes on. These aren’t going to be classics that hold value, in my opinion.

No reserve is always a gamble. I’ve seen some great deals come through, but I’ve also seen people get stuck paying more than market value because of bidding wars. What’s the current bid at?

The convertible top on these is a real concern. Bring a Trailer has good documentation usually, so hopefully you can see the condition clearly. I’d have that inspected before committing any serious money.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I’m still on the fence about actually bidding, but I’m doing my research. The convertible top condition is definitely one of my top priorities to verify. I’ve heard mixed things about the reliability of these engines – anyone here have specific experience with the V8 in these?

The maintenance costs on these can be brutal honestly. I looked into one a couple years ago and quoted some repairs – basic stuff like spark plugs and filters – and everything seemed overpriced because it’s less common. Factor that into your budget.

I think these are underrated! Sure they’re retro, but there’s a market for them. I see them at car shows and people always stop to look. Not everything has to be a practical investment to be worth owning.

Does anyone know what engine is in this specific one? That would make a huge difference in how I’d feel about it. The V8 is fun but thirsty on gas.

I completely disagree that these will be classics. They’re novelty cars at best. The execution on the retro design is clunky and the driving experience is underwhelming compared to modern cars. Pass on this one.

No reserve though – that’s the real draw here. If you can snag it for the right price, it could be a fun weekend car. Just don’t overpay thinking it’s an investment piece.

Look, I’ll give it some credit – the build quality seems solid for a 2004 Ford. That’s not nothing. Maybe I was too harsh before. Still wouldn’t buy one myself though.

The seat comfort on these is actually pretty good from what I’ve read. That’s a nice feature for a weekend cruiser. Combined with the convertible top, this could be a fun car for nice weather drives.

The insurance on these convertibles can get expensive too depending on your location and driving record. That’s another hidden cost people don’t always factor in.

Anyone checked the auction history on Bring a Trailer to see what similar Thunderbirds have sold for recently? That would give you a good baseline for bidding strategy.
