Hey everyone, I just read something that caught my attention. Colorado law enforcement issued over 2,540 tickets last year to drivers who were camping out in the left lane. This is apparently a significant enforcement push in the state, and I’m curious what everyone thinks about it.

For those unfamiliar, left lane camping is when drivers stay in the passing lane instead of moving to the right after passing vehicles. It’s technically illegal in Colorado and many other states, but enforcement varies widely. The fact that they’ve issued this many tickets suggests they’re really cracking down on the practice.

I can see both sides of this. On one hand, left lane hogs absolutely cause problems on the highway. They back up traffic, create dangerous situations, and frustrate drivers who need to pass. When someone just sits in the left lane at the same speed as traffic, it’s annoying and potentially unsafe. Proper lane discipline makes roads smoother and safer for everyone.

On the other hand, I wonder how much of this enforcement is about genuinely dangerous behavior versus just generating revenue. Are these tickets proportionate? Are police focusing on egregious cases or getting people for minor infractions? The numbers seem pretty high to me.

I’m also curious about how this affects different types of drivers. Commuters, long-haul truckers, casual drivers—do they all get ticketed equally? And what are the actual fines involved? Is this changing driver behavior on Colorado highways?

Has anyone here gotten a ticket for this in Colorado? Or have you noticed changes in how people drive in the left lane? I’m interested in hearing real experiences rather than just the statistics. Do you think 2,540 tickets is appropriate enforcement, too much, or not enough?

I disagree with this enforcement. People camp in the left lane for valid reasons sometimes—weather conditions, heavy traffic, or uncertainty about upcoming exits. Not everyone is being malicious. Issuing 2,540 tickets seems like overkill.

About time Colorado took this seriously. I drive I-25 regularly and the left lane camping is absolutely ridiculous. People just cruise up there like they own it. These tickets might actually teach some discipline.

The maintenance cost for highways increases when traffic doesn’t flow smoothly. Backups cause more wear and tear, more accidents, more emissions. Proper lane discipline actually saves the state money in the long run.

I’m from Colorado and I’ve definitely noticed more aggressive enforcement on the highways lately. The left lane is supposed to be for passing only. It’s basic driving education that somehow nobody follows.

Left lane camping is genuinely dangerous though. People need to pass and move on. Keep right except to pass should be enforced everywhere.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I think the key issue is consistency. If Colorado is going to enforce this, they need clear guidelines so drivers know what constitutes left lane camping versus normal driving. 2,540 tickets could be justified if these are all egregious cases, or it could be excessive if people are getting ticketed for minor infractions.

This is just revenue generation disguised as traffic safety. Colorado needs to fund their roads somehow, I guess.

I’ve gotten tickets in other states for this. Honestly it makes you think twice before settling into the left lane. The fine definitely changed my behavior.

The problem is that many drivers don’t understand or care about the rule. They think the speed limit applies to all lanes equally. More enforcement plus education might actually work.

The keep right rule is universal driving etiquette. Colorado is just finally enforcing something that should always have been enforced. Not controversial at all.

I disagree that this is helpful. Drivers are stressed enough on highways without worrying about left lane tickets. Focus on dangerous speeders instead.

The best outcome would be if 2,540 drivers learned the lesson and the number drops significantly next year. That’s the real success metric.

Does anyone know what the actual fine amount is? That would help determine if this enforcement is reasonable or if it’s purely punitive.

2,540 is a huge number. That’s almost 7 tickets per day on average across the entire state. Either enforcement is everywhere or these statistics are including minor violations.
