Hey everyone, I just had to share this incredible experience. I recently acquired a 1970 MG Midget that I’ve named ‘Kimbo’, and honestly, this little car has completely changed my perspective on classic car ownership. I’ve been searching for years to find a community that truly understands the passion behind restoring and driving these British classics, and I finally feel like I’ve found my people.
Kimbo is an absolute gem – she’s got that classic British Leyland charm with the iconic styling that made MG Midgets legendary back in the seventies. The moment I got behind that small steering wheel and felt the responsive handling, I knew this was special. Sure, she’s not the fastest or the most powerful car on the road, but there’s something magical about the driving experience that modern cars just can’t replicate.
What really struck me was attending my first local car meet with Kimbo. I expected maybe a handful of enthusiasts, but I was blown away by the sheer number of people who came over to talk about her, share their own stories about MG Midgets they’ve owned, and offer genuine advice and support. The MG community is incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. People were sharing restoration tips, parts sourcing strategies, and even inviting me to future events.
I’ve been documenting the entire journey with Kimbo – from the initial inspection to the ongoing maintenance and restoration work. There’s something deeply satisfying about learning how these cars actually work, understanding every system from the ground up. The simplicity of the engineering is refreshing compared to the complexity of modern vehicles.

I’m estimating around $2,000-3,500 annually for regular upkeep, depending on what issues crop up. The key is finding reliable suppliers and learning to do some work myself to keep costs down. As for the restoration, I’m taking a measured approach – fixing what’s broken while preserving the original character of the car.
