The viscosity index thing is interesting. Higher VI means better performance across temperature ranges, which is another reason synthetic oils are superior for modern engines. The debate isn’t really settled if you look at real data.

I always mix and match brands because I figure oil is oil. Now I’m wondering if I should be more consistent with one brand?

Has anyone actually noticed a difference in fuel economy based on oil grade? I read somewhere that thinner oils improve MPG slightly.
