The maintenance costs on these can add up pretty quickly once you’re out of warranty. Turbo repairs aren’t cheap, and if the timing chain ever goes, you’re looking at $3,000-$5,000 in labor alone. Just something to factor into your budget.

Great find! The Veloster Turbo is actually a pretty fun car for the money. I had a friend with a 2015 model and he loved the handling dynamics. The turbo gives you enough power without being excessive. Just make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection done, especially check the transmission fluid condition.

I’ve driven one of these at a track day rental and it was genuinely impressive for a sub-$15k used car. The steering is sharp, the turbo lag isn’t bad, and it’s fun without breaking the bank. Would definitely consider it if the maintenance history is solid.

I’d pass on this one honestly. The Hyundai turbo engines from that generation had some reliability concerns. Better off looking at a Honda Civic or Mazda3 if you want similar performance with better dependability.

The 2016 model year specifically had some software issues with the dual-clutch transmission. Check if the owner has had any updates applied. Make that your first question when contacting them.

Thanks for all the feedback so far! This one has 62k miles on it with full service records. The owner is the second owner and claims no issues. I’m leaning toward getting the PPI done this weekend at an independent shop that specializes in Korean vehicles. Will report back on what they find.

The Veloster Turbo is criminally underrated. People overlook it because of the brand perception, but Hyundai has really improved their quality. This generation is solid. Go for it if the price is right.

Those triple exhaust outlets look sick though. Aesthetic alone makes me want one lol. But seriously, solid daily driver if you’re handy with maintenance.

How many miles are on this particular one? That matters more than the year. A 2016 with 80k miles is different from one with 150k miles. Hyundai reliability is decent but it depends heavily on maintenance history.

The styling is definitely unique with that asymmetrical design. Whether that’s a positive or negative is subjective though. Performance-wise it’s decent for 2016.

Check the clutch wear if it’s manual. The Veloster manual transmissions can be finicky about clutch feel and engagement point. Make sure it shifts smoothly through all gears.

I would not recommend this car. The fuel pump failures were common on these turbo models. Several forum posts about it. Not worth the risk.

Insurance rates on these are actually pretty competitive compared to other sports-oriented hatchbacks. That’s a hidden benefit not many people mention when evaluating used cars.
