Hey everyone, I just spotted this incredible piece of automotive history up for grabs on Bring a Trailer. It’s a Mobilgas-branded Gilbert & Barker gas pump cart with no reserve, which means it could be a steal for the right collector.

This pump is a beautiful example of mid-century Americana. The Mobilgas branding is iconic – instantly recognizable with that distinctive red Pegasus logo. Gilbert & Barker was one of the premier pump manufacturers of that era, known for their quality construction and attention to detail. What’s particularly interesting about this piece is that it’s being sold at no reserve, so theoretically anyone could win it at a competitive price.

The pump appears to be in solid condition from the listing photos. The dial mechanism still functions, and the vintage aesthetic is completely intact. For collectors of petroliana, gas station memorabilia, or just vintage Americana enthusiasts, this is exactly the kind of authentic artifact that defines a collection.

I’m torn between bidding on this myself or just admiring it from afar. The challenge with pieces like this is figuring out where to display them and how to maintain them properly. But man, imagine having this in a garage or man cave – it’s such a conversation starter.

Has anyone here purchased vintage gas pumps before? What should potential bidders know about authenticity, condition assessment, or fair pricing for these pieces? Also curious if anyone has experience with restoration or maintenance on vintage pumps. Would love to hear from folks who’ve gone down this collecting rabbit hole before I make any decisions.

The auction link is in the title if anyone wants to check it out and share their thoughts!

That Mobilgas pump is gorgeous! The condition looks really nice from what I can see. Gilbert & Barker pumps are solid built – they were engineered to last. No reserve auctions can be tricky though. Sometimes you get amazing deals, other times bidding wars push prices higher than reserve listings. Have you set a maximum bid yet?

I’ve been collecting vintage pumps for about 8 years now. My advice – inspect the dial mechanism closely. Those vintage mechanisms can be finicky, and replacement parts are expensive and hard to find. The Mobilgas branding adds significant value to this piece. Definitely worth monitoring the bidding.

This is beautiful! I love the red color scheme. Mobilgas had such great marketing aesthetic back in the day. The Pegasus logo is instantly recognizable. I’m not a pump collector myself, but I appreciate the vintage gas station memorabilia scene. Good luck with this one!

Honestly, I think pumps like this are overpriced in the current market. Everyone wants vintage gas station stuff, but they’re not practical for anything. You’re just paying for nostalgia. I’d rather invest in actual working vintage machinery. But that’s just me.

The maintenance costs on these pumps can get brutal. I had a similar Gilbert & Barker pump, and when the internal seals started degrading, replacement parts ran me over $800. Plus you need climate control to prevent rust and deterioration. Just something to factor into your budget before bidding.

Thanks everyone for the input! @samuel_jimenezc, I really appreciate the insight about the dial mechanism. That’s exactly the kind of detail I needed to think about. @nour_mam, wow, $800 for seals? That’s substantial. I hadn’t fully considered ongoing maintenance costs. This is why I love this forum – getting real-world perspectives before making decisions.

Gilbert & Barker made tanks for a reason – they were the industry standard. This pump should hold its value well if you ever want to sell. The no reserve format is interesting because Mobilgas pumps typically move pretty quickly. This could end up being a competitive bidding situation.

I disagree with the pessimism here. Vintage Mobilgas pieces are legitimate collectibles with real historical significance. They’re not just nostalgia – they’re artifacts of American commercial history. The craftsmanship on pumps from this era is honestly superior to a lot of modern stuff. Worth every penny in my opinion.

Has anyone considered what the shipping would be on something like this? These pump carts are heavy and bulky. Logistics could add significant cost to the final purchase price. Just a practical consideration I don’t see discussed yet.

The Mobilgas branding is what makes this special. That Pegasus logo became legendary. If you’re serious about pump collecting, Mobilgas is one of the most sought-after brands. I’d bid on this if I had the space. Great find!

@dustin_fitzgeraldu I actually have to push back on the overpriced comment. Vintage petroliana has shown strong appreciation over the last 5 years. These aren’t just decorative – they’re historically significant artifacts with documented provenance. The market reflects legitimate collector interest.

Does anyone know if this particular pump is original Gilbert & Barker or if it’s been restored? That distinction matters hugely for value. Original paint and mechanisms are worth more than professionally restored versions. Might be worth doing some research before the auction closes.
